The Reviewer of the Month for December 2020: Dr. Jaques Waisberg

Dr. Jaques Waisberg

We are proud to announce that the Reviewer of the Month Award for December 2020 goes to Dr. Jaques Waisberg.

As a means to promote the hard work and dedication invested “behind the scenes” in order to improve scientific publications, each month BJBMS Editors select a reviewer who performed the best amongst all the reviewers in the current month. Selection is based on the quality, thoroughness and the timeliness of review. It is a difficult task for our Editors, as they try not to underestimate the time and efforts of each of the reviewers who reviewed for the BJBMS in the current month.

Dr. Jaques Waisberg is a researcher and the full professor at the Department of Surgery at the ABC Medical School, Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil. His current research interests are related with the carcinogenesis and neoplasms of the digestive system, with a primary focus on colorectal neoplasms. In addition, his research is based on the tumor markers and cancer stem cells.

We asked Dr. Jaques Waisberg about the importance and other aspects of the peer-review process in general:

The cognizance that the convenience to write an article has to be the same to evaluate the texts of other colleagues is essential for a equilibrium to be established in the review system. It is very frequent for researchers not to understand that the significance of writing and publishing articles is the similar as being accessible to review articles in a amount corresponding to the one in which they are created. Another very important feature concerning the consciousness of the prominence of the review process is the fulfillment of the deadlines set for carrying out the reviews, what can contribute to the slowness of the editorial progression. The reviewers should support authors improve their work assessing what was done, not what the reviewer would do; to maintain the emphasis on the impact of the manuscript; a critical-propositional attitude; when possible, to show applicable literature; and to ask questions when there are misgivings. Those who are in the habit of reviewing manuscripts develop their skills more quickly and easily to produce their own articles with better quality, as they have a familiarity of the review process and know how to better identify any weaknesses in their own intellectual production.

BJBMS congratulates Dr. Jaques Waisberg and wishes him many awards and recognitions in the future.
