Scientists established a novel prediction tool for the very early onset colorectal cancer

In contrast to the declining incidence in older populations, the incidence of very early onset colorectal cancer (VEO-CRC) patients aged 40 years or less has been rising in many parts of the world. Thus, it is clinically important to establish a strong prediction model that can accurately predict the survival time of VEO-CRC patients by taking into account a wide range of prognostic factors. Researchers from The Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University established prediction models of patients with VEO-CRC, for both overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS).

The study gathered a total of 3061 VEO-CRC patients for the development and verification of the nomogram – a two-dimensional diagram. Scientists discovered clinical variables associated with survival in VEO-CRC and then established a comprehensive and accurate nomogram to predict the OS and CSS prognosis of patients. Compared with the other two cancer staging systems, the nomogram exhibited superior predictive performance.

By establishing and validated a simple-to-use nomogram, it is possible to evaluate the 1-, 3- and 5-year OS and CSS prognosis, and this tool may be utilized to assist clinicians in optimizing individualized treatment plans for VEO-CRC patients.
