Effect of LiCl on 3NPA-induced striatal and hippocampal lesion stained with COX, Syt4, and Syt7 mRNAs. The panel demonstrates adjacent coronal/hippocampal sections from the same animal that represents the groups treated with 3NPA+LiCl, 3NPA, LiCl, and saline that were stained for COX activity, or processed for autoradiographic procedure of in situ hybridization of Syt4 and Syt7 mRNAs.

The graphs below each column of the images illustrate the results of measurement of the size of striatal (% of hypodense region) and hippocampal (% of hypodense length of stratum pyramidale) lesions. The bars represent the average value ± standard deviation (SD); *statistical significance of the differences between lesions in the groups treated with 3NPA+LiCl (n = 4) and with 3NPA (n = 5) were calculated using unpaired Student’s t-test. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. It can be observed that the striatal and hippocampal relative optical densities (RODs) on the images of COX histochemical staining and in situ hybridization autoradiograms of the LiCl and saline groups were apparently unaffected by the treatments.
