BiomolBiomed is pleased to announce the winners of the Most Cited and Most Shared Article Awards for 2023. These awards recognize outstanding research published in the 2020 and 2021 issues of our journal. For more information on the selection criteria, please click here.
The Most Cited Article award goes to “Pathogenesis of atherosclerosis in the tunica intima, media, and adventitia of coronary arteries: An updated review” by Aleksandra Milutinović and Ruda Zorc-Pleskovič, University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. This in-depth analysis delves into the complex pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, a chronic inflammatory disease that affects arteries and is a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases worldwide. The authors explore the development of atherosclerosis within the tunica intima, media, and adventitia layers of coronary arteries. Their review article challenges the traditional view of the tunica intima’s structure and highlights the importance of endothelial cell dysfunction as a critical initial step in atherosclerosis development.
The Most Shared Article award goes to “P2X7 receptor as an independent prognostic indicator in gastric cancer” by Ilknur Calik and Adile Ferda Dagli, Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Fırat University, Elazığ, Turkey. Their study investigates the prognostic value of P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) expression in gastric cancer (GC), one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide. P2X7R, a unique molecule that affects tumor growth, progression, and various inflammatory processes, has been identified as a prognostic parameter in some cancers and is being researched for the development of new targeted therapies. Calik and Dagli’s study examines P2X7R expression in 156 paraffin-embedded human GC specimens and reveals that upregulated P2X7R expression is significantly correlated with worsened overall survival, suggesting P2X7R as a reliable prognostic parameter and a promising therapeutic target for GC.
