This month, we are proud to recognize the Reviewer of the Month for May 2025—someone whose exceptional commitment and knowledge embody the principles of this essential practice.
Reviewers are instrumental in helping authors enhance their manuscripts by offering detailed evaluations and insightful suggestions. Their efforts contribute to the publication of research that is robust, relevant, and methodologically rigorous.
Every month, the BiomolBiomed Editorial team honors a peer reviewer who has shown remarkable dedication to the peer review process. This acknowledgment is reserved for individuals who consistently provide thoughtful, thorough, and constructive evaluations—helping authors improve their work and advancing the scientific field as a whole. Their efforts reflect the collaborative spirit and pursuit of excellence that drive scientific progress.
This month, we are pleased to announce that the Reviewer of the Month Award goes to Dr. Yasser M. Samhan. Dr. Samhan, Professor and former Chairman of the Anesthesia and ICU Department at the Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Egypt, is being honored for his exceptional review. His insightful feedback significantly contributed to improving the clarity and scientific rigor of the authors’ work.
We had the opportunity to speak with Prof. Dr. Samhan about his approach to peer review and his views on the ever-changing landscape of academic publishing. During our conversation, he shared his research passions and offered thoughtful perspectives on recent trends and challenges in his field. Below are some key takeaways from our discussion:

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in scientific research, and what motivates you to continue in this profession?
A career in research expands your mind. I have been always interested in solving problems, collaborating, and communicating with the research community to find some answers to complex questions. Probably, my education experience as well as my mentors had an important aspect on my research career. The thrill of discovery, the collaborative nature of research as well as the option to work with like- minded individuals were also an important motivating factor.
2. What strategies do you use to ensure that your feedback is both fair and useful to the authors?
The main role of the reviewer is to improve the quality of the article presented and not to criticize it looking for mistakes to reject it. To be both fair and useful to the authors, you must first put yourself as one of them and start reviewing the article as an innocent witness. You must be constructive showing the areas of strength first to encourage improvement. Areas of weakness can be addressed later, yet you must be specific, and objective based on evidence and best practices keeping always the research outcome as your primary target to highlight. Criticism should always be constructive ending with encouraging remarks to keep the positive drive with the authors.
3. What steps can be taken to improve the peer-review process to ensure it better aligns with the needs and expectations of today’s researchers?
I think we can always start using AI tools to assist reviewers in identifying mistakes, plagiarism, or defects in the study design. Collaborative review can also be considered where all reviewers share their thoughts and comments to avoid duplications in the review process. Setting clear and strict guidelines for the reviewers can help reducing delays and improves the efficiency of the process. Adding reviewers from different geographic locations will probably minimize the bias and enrich the process through sharing worldwide professional experience.

1. ما الذي ألهمك لاختيار مسار البحث العلمي، وما الذي يدفعك للاستمرار في هذا المجال؟
مهنة البحث العلمي توسّع مدارك الإنسان. لطالما كنت مهتمًا بحل المشكلات، والتعاون، والتواصل مع مجتمع الباحثين للعثور على إجابات للأسئلة المعقدة. على الأرجح، كان لتجربتي التعليمية ولمعلميّ تأثير كبير في مسيرتي البحثية. إن شعور الاكتشاف، وطبيعة العمل التعاوني، وفرصة العمل مع أشخاص يتشاركون نفس الاهتمام، كانت من العوامل المحفزة أيضًا.
2. ما الاستراتيجيات التي تتبعها لضمان أن تكون ملاحظاتك عادلة ومفيدة للمؤلفين؟
الدور الرئيسي للمُراجع هو تحسين جودة المقال المقدم وليس انتقاده بنية رفضه. ولكي تكون المراجعة عادلة ومفيدة، يجب أولاً أن تضع نفسك مكان المؤلف وتبدأ بقراءة المقال كشاهد نزيه. يجب أن تكون بناءً في الملاحظات، وتُبرز النقاط القوية أولاً لتشجيع التحسين. أما النقاط الضعيفة، فيمكن تناولها لاحقًا، لكن مع تقديم ملاحظات دقيقة وموضوعية تستند إلى الأدلة والممارسات المثلى، مع التركيز على هدف البحث كأولوية. يجب أن تكون الملاحظات النقدية دائمًا بناءة وتنتهي بتعليقات مشجعة للحفاظ على الدافع الإيجابي لدى المؤلفين.
3. ما الخطوات التي يمكن اتخاذها لتحسين عملية مراجعة الأقران لتلائم بشكل أفضل احتياجات وتوقعات الباحثين اليوم؟
أعتقد أنه يمكننا البدء باستخدام أدوات الذكاء الاصطناعي لمساعدة المراجعين في اكتشاف الأخطاء أو الانتحال أو عيوب التصميم في الدراسة. كما يمكن التفكير في المراجعة التعاونية حيث يشارك جميع المراجعين أفكارهم وملاحظاتهم لتجنب التكرار. كذلك، فإن وضع إرشادات واضحة وصارمة للمراجعين يمكن أن يساعد في تقليل التأخير وتحسين كفاءة العملية. إضافة مراجعين من مواقع جغرافية مختلفة يمكن أن يقلل من التحيز ويُثري العملية بتبادل الخبرات العالمية.
