The Reviewer of the Month for February 2025: Petar Ozretić, PhD

This month, we are delighted to announce that the Reviewer of the Month Award is presented to Petar Ozretić, PhD. Dr. Petar, a Senior Research Associate at the Laboratory for Hereditary Cancer, Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI), Zagreb, Croatia, has been recognized for his outstanding review, which provided invaluable insights that greatly enhanced the clarity and rigor of the authors’ research.

We had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Petar about his approach to peer review and his views on the ever-changing landscape of academic publishing. During our conversation, he shared his research passions and offered thoughtful perspectives on recent trends and challenges in his field. Below are some key takeaways from our discussion:

At the moment, my primary research interests include three topics: the role of sex hormone receptors in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, the role of RNA modifications and their regulators in different types of tumors, and lastly, the role of human microbiome in etiopathology of different diseases. Both epitranscriptomics and metagenomics have recently become hot topics in biomedicine. However, the main challenge still remains – scarcity of research funding.

2. Have you ever encountered a manuscript that challenged your expertise in a certain area? If so, how did you      approach the review?

For a proper evaluation of a manuscript, one of the essential requirements for a reviewer is to understand whether the methods described in the manuscript are being used correctly and how to properly interpret their results. However, since research methodologies are constantly and rapidly evolving, it is crucial to keep pace with these advancements. Recently, I had to learn how single-cell RNA sequencing data is analyzed and how to interpret the results of a Mendelian randomization study. Nevertheless, I still primarily choose to review manuscripts that are theoretically and methodologically well within my expertise.

3. What advice would you give to new reviewers who are just starting out in the peer-review process?

One of the main pieces of advice I would give is to insist that methods be described in as much detail as possible, since researchers—both wet and dry—unfortunately do not always prioritize reproducibility. Another important recommendation is to insist on the use of approved and standardized gene and protein symbols, as well as cell line names, since consistent usage of standardized biomedical terms is essential for unambiguous science. And of course, the correct application of statistical methods is absolutely necessary.

Recenzija je temeljni stup znanstvenog izdavaštva, ključan za očuvanje integriteta, kvalitete i vjerodostojnosti istraživanja. Ovaj mjesec s ponosom predstavljamo Recenzenta mjeseca za veljaču 2025. godine – osobu čija izvanredna predanost i stručnost odražavaju temeljne vrijednosti ovog važnog procesa.

Recenzenti imaju ključnu ulogu u pomaganju autorima da poboljšaju svoj rad kroz temeljite procjene i konstruktivne povratne informacije. Njihov doprinos osigurava da objavljena istraživanja budu točna, relevantna i metodološki utemeljena.

Svaki mjesec uredništvo časopisa BiomolBiomed prepoznaje izniman trud recenzenata odabirom pojedinca koji je pokazao izvanrednu predanost ovoj važnoj odgovornosti. Ovo priznanje odaje počast onima koji ulažu dodatni trud u pružanje detaljnih, pronicljivih i poticajnih kritika, čime ne samo da poboljšavaju rukopise koje recenziraju, već i pridonose širem napretku znanstvenog znanja. Njihov rad utjelovljuje duh suradnje i izvrsnosti koji pokreće znanost naprijed.

Ovaj mjesec s velikim zadovoljstvom objavljujemo da je nagrada Recenzent mjeseca dodijeljena dr. sc. Petru Ozretiću. Dr. Petar, viši znanstveni suradnik u Laboratoriju za nasljedni rak na Institutu Ruđer Bošković (IRB) u Zagrebu, Hrvatska, prepoznat je po svojoj izvanrednoj recenziji koja je pružila neprocjenjive uvide i značajno unaprijedila jasnoću i metodološku preciznost istraživanja autora.

Imali smo priliku razgovarati s dr. Petrom o njegovom pristupu recenzentskom procesu te o njegovim pogledima na neprestano promjenjivi krajolik akademskog izdavaštva. Tijekom razgovora podijelio je svoje znanstvene strasti i ponudio promišljene uvide u aktualne trendove i izazove u svom području. U nastavku donosimo ključne naglaske iz našeg razgovora.

Interview:

1. Možete li opisati svoja primarna istraživačka područja te nedavne trendove ili izazove koji imaju poseban utjecaj na vaše područje?

Trenutno su moji primarni istraživački interesi usmjereni na tri teme: ulogu receptora spolnih hormona u planocelularnom karcinomu glave i vrata, ulogu RNA modifikacija i njihovih regulatora u različitim vrstama tumora te, naposljetku, ulogu ljudskog mikrobioma u etiopatologiji različitih bolesti. Epitranskriptomika i metagenomika u posljednje su vrijeme postale izrazito aktualne teme u biomedicini. Međutim, glavni izazov i dalje ostaje – ograničena dostupnost financiranja za istraživanja.

2. Jeste li se ikada susreli s rukopisom koji je predstavljao izazov za vaše područje stručnosti? Ako da, kako ste pristupili recenziji?

Za pravilnu procjenu rukopisa jedan je od osnovnih zahtjeva razumijevanje metoda koje su u njemu opisane te njihova ispravna interpretacija. No, budući da se istraživačke metodologije neprestano i brzo razvijaju, ključno je pratiti te napretke. Nedavno sam, primjerice, morao naučiti kako se analiziraju podaci dobiveni jednokomponentnim RNA sekvenciranjem te kako interpretirati rezultate studije Mendelove randomizacije. Ipak, primarno biram recenzirati rukopise koji su teorijski i metodološki unutar mog užeg područja stručnosti.

3. Koji biste savjet dali novim recenzentima koji tek započinju s procesom recenzije?

Jedan od ključnih savjeta koji bih dao jest inzistirati na što detaljnijem opisu metoda, budući da istraživači – kako oni koji rade eksperimentalne studije, tako i oni koji se bave analitičkim istraživanjima – nažalost ne pridaju uvijek dovoljno pažnje ponovljivosti svojih eksperimenata. Druga važna preporuka odnosi se na dosljednu upotrebu standardiziranih naziva gena i proteina te naziva staničnih linija, jer je dosljedna uporaba standardizirane terminologije ključna za jasnu i nedvosmislenu znanost. I naravno, ispravna primjena statističkih metoda apsolutno je nužna.

S velikim zadovoljstvom odajemo priznanje dr. sc. Petru Ozretiću za njegov izvanredan rad, koji služi kao inspiracija kolegama recenzentima u njihovoj težnji za izvrsnošću. Također, potičemo sve da prepoznaju proces recenzije kao neizostavan stup znanstvenog izdavaštva.
