Bosnian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences February 2017

February 2017 issue of Bosnian Journal of Basic Medical Sciences is published today. As with the previous issues, we cover many fields of basic medical, as well as translational medical research in this issue.

Read about clinical significance of routine lacrimal sac biopsy during dacryocystorhinostomy in a comprehensive review by Koturovic et al. Another review by Vranic et al. deals with one of the special types of breast cancer, namely the Apocrine carcinoma of the breast and its molecular features and biomarkers.

A highly accessed article from Cui et al. reports that neuroprotective agent DL-2-amino-3-phosphonopropionic acid (DL-AP3) may protect primary neurons from OGD-induced injury by affecting the viability and apoptosis of neurons, and by regulating the expressions of p-Akt1 and cytochrome c. Yu et al. from China deal with the pathogenesis of Pigeon Breeder’s lungs, a lung inflammatory disease associated with the immune response to repeated pigeon-derived antigen exposure. They report that low Foxp3+CD4+ Treg expression or overconsumption may be a pathogenic factor in this disease. An important article about orthodontic tooth movement has been published by Nakas et al. They report about positive dose- and time-dependent effects of clodronate on orthodontic tooth movement and suggest establishment of safe therapeutic doses in future research.  Another highly accessed article in advanced online stage comes from Lu and collaborators, from China. They investigated potential inflammatory markers in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome, a complex chronic inflammatory respiratory disease with multiple pathogenic factors and high morbidity and mortality. They found that nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), hypoxia-inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α), and surfactant protein D (SPD) play a significant role in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome.
